Cities like Lake Charles offer world-class hotels, casinos, and fine dining. Sure, you can hear amazing music all over Louisiana, but if you want to hear Cajun and zydeco bubbling forth from the waters where these musical traditions were born, you have to come to Southwest Louisiana. In Cajun country, they throw more than just beads. Things kick off just east of Lake Charles in Iowa pronounced I-way with the sound of zydeco early in the morning on Fat Tuesday. If families approve of the music and dancing from the parade, they then donate their ingredients! Once all the ingredients have been gathered, everyone dances around the pot with more music while the smells of seafood, chicken, sausage, and roux fill the air.
Mardi Gras is the love of life. All at once. To really understand what a Chicken Run is, you must understand the cultural significance of the above statement. Zydeco music was playing by a live band in the back of a parade-like float being pulled by a tractor trailer. I saw him out of the corner of my eye, an old man with a shiny washboard on his chest, a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, and strumming his fingers to the music alongside a young man playing the accordion. Then I saw the leader of the group, Rodney Victorian.

The truth is, Mardi Gras is family friendly for the communities that celebrate it the traditional way. Mardi Gras refers to Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent begins for Catholics, and the end of a season of revelry. The weekend leading up to Fat Tuesday is generally the most boisterous. From balls and pageants, gumbo cook-offs and crawfish boils, music and parades, Lake Charles plays host to an array of festive activities for all ages to enjoy. The Lake Charles Civic Center is the heart of all the action. Located on Lakeshore Drive, between the historical city center and Lake Charles itself, the Civic Center grounds are home to an endless festival.
