Jim C. The Nebula and Hugo awards are generally considered to be two of the most prestigious and well-known awards for science fiction and fantasy literature. As a result, lots of authors would really like to win them. So how does an author go about getting on the ballot? Authors do not submit their work for consideration for either the Hugo or the Nebula. In theory, members nominate what they believe are the best works in each category.

The Hugo Awards and the Nebula Awards are the traditional yardsticks for fantasy and science fiction writing and have been for decades. Winners are guaranteed a place in literary history and first editions of these acclaimed novels have become highly collectible. The collection has now sold. When a paperback is the true first edition, then the first hardcover is also included. In some cases, US and UK hardcovers had been included where the paperback was the true first. The Nebula Awards annually recognize the best works of science fiction or fantasy published in the United States. The awards are organized and awarded by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America SFWA , a nonprofit association of professional science fiction and fantasy writers. They were first given in at a ceremony created for the awards, and are given in four categories for different lengths of literary works. They are chosen from fiction printed during the previous year. The origins of the award go back to when Lloyd Biggle, Jr. Lloyd proposed that funding for the awards ceremony and trophies could be provided through sales of an anthology that contained the collected stories of the award winners. The Hugo award had already been around for a decade, relying on the votes of fans to select the winners.
