My Ántonia (Great Plains Trilogy, #3) by Willa Cather

Through Jim Burdens endearing, smitten voice, we revisit the remarkable vicissitudes of immigrant life in the Nebraska heartland, with all its insistent bonds. Guiding the way are some of literatures most beguiling characters: the Russian brothers plagued by memories of a fateful sleigh ride, Antonias desperately homesick father and self-indulgent mother, and the coy Lena Lingard. Holding the pastoral societys heart, of course, is the bewitching, free-spirited Antonia.

Book Club Review: My Antonia

My Ántonia

In the late s, recently orphaned Jim Burden leaves his home in Virginia to live with his grandparents in rural Nebraska. Ten-year-old Jim feels immediately at home on the prairie. He quickly settles into his new life with Jake Marpole and Otto Fuchs , the farm hands, and his loving grandparents. Shimerda , frail and homesick, finds the adjustment to farm life especially difficult. But when Pavel dies suddenly, Peter leaves to find a job in railway construction.

It shows how these people were at the mercy of nature; how their life and livelihoods hung on the turn of the seasons. Its unobtrusive, effortlessly vivid prose leads us from "the windy springs and the blazing summers" all the way to a winter that's so clear, crisp and crystalline it feels as though we're witnessing it for the very first time. The snow arrives in early December, when Jim wakes to see the fat flakes swirling in the red grass beyond the house. This is exciting, because it transforms the terrain and provides an excuse for sleigh-rides. Yet the longer it lasts, the more the winter takes its toll. The settlers retreat indoors for months on end, where they wrap up in blankets and eat taffy by the fire.
