A.W. Tozer Quotes (Author of The Pursuit of God)
The Most Important Thing
In his great book The Knowledge of the Holy , A. In this video and the following transcript, I share some thoughts about the quote and book:. I remember having lunch a couple years ago with Gerry Breshears, theology professor at Western Seminary, and Bruce Ware, who teaches theology at Southern Seminary. We were there with another friend. The Knowledge of the Holy is a book that I think people need to read, because Tozer writes things like this: the most important thing about any of us is what we think of God. He says that if you know what a person really believes in his or her heart that God is like, you will be able to predict with certainty the spiritual future of that person.
Because ethnicity is part of the good of creation, we seek to honor and celebrate the ethnic identity of those with whom we serve as well as those we seek to reach. Worship is pure or base as the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God. For this reason the gravest question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like. We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God. Always the most revealing thing about the Church is her idea of God, just as her most significant message is what she says about Him or leaves unsaid, for her silence is often more eloquent than her speech. She can never escape the self-disclosure of her witness concerning God.
They that know Thee not may call upon Thee as other than Thou art, and so worship not Thee but a creature of their own fancy; therefore enlighten our minds that we may know Thee as Thou art, so that we may perfectly love Thee and worthily praise Thee. This is true not only of the individual Christian, but of the company of Christians that composes the Church. Always the most revealing thing about the Church is its idea of God, just as its most significant message is what it says about Him or leaves unsaid, for its silence is often more eloquent than its speech. It can never escape the self-disclosure of its witness concerning God.
See a Problem?
Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy. When you go through a hard time, what you think about God will affect how you do. Do you think God is sovereign and loving and good?
Have you ever wondered what the most powerful and destructive weapon is on earth? But greater that all of this put together, is a weapon that can unleash more destructive force than anything else on earth: an idea. So if you control his ideas, then you control the man… or the army… or the nation… or even the world! Ask yourself, what was it that created the Hitlers, Stalins, and Ayatollahs of this past century? Simply put — ideas.
