Read This When You’re Feeling Insecure And Don’t Know Why
This is for those days when you feel vulnerable, lacking in confidence, and unworthy of love; those times when you sense threats to your happiness all around. This is for the occasions where every thought in your head is driven by fear; for all those doubts, self-defeating beliefs, and devaluing ideas. When that wave of unease crashes over you, the world can suddenly seem like an altogether more frightening place to be. It may not have a single, clear cause, but rather be the culmination of countless tiny thoughts, ideas, and events acting like individual sticks that mount up to stop the flow of a river. When the river within your mind gets dammed, the normal flow of mental energy comes to a halt. As it pools behind the blockage, it floods out into the recesses of your psyche where it can manifest in several forms — insecurity being one of the main ones. To stay afloat in this directionless stream of mental energy, you first have to find something to cling onto — a positive thought, a funny memory, or an upbeat dream for the future.
And social media, with its culture of getting us to want approval with likes and retweets, with its showing off amazing bodies and amazing travels and food … it only exacerbates the problem. But you know all this. That means a bit of courage. What gets in our way to dealing with insecurities? There are obstacles littering the path. There are old wounds that have never healed.
Back when I was at school, I stood out, being one of the only Asian students in a small English village. This heightened my awareness of how different I looked in relation to my peers and started my obsession of comparing myself with others. By the age of thirteen, I suddenly sprouted into a gangly, long-limbed teenager with greasy hair. I retreated into my world of loud and angry rock music, pretending not to care about anything but secretly in a spiral of self-hatred and loneliness. By seventeen, my self-hatred had intensified and I began working in a part-time job to start saving for plastic surgery—the only thing I decided would make me happy about my appearance.
Unfortunately, insecurity is a natural part of the human experience. One of the costs of being alive is the fact that, no matter who you are, you can expect to deal with insecurity of some kind on a daily basis. It may be something small like whether your smoky eye is too smoky or something huge like whether or not you've got what it takes to succeed at your chosen profession. Regardless of what makes you feel insecure, knowing what to tell yourself when you're feeling this way can help you keep excess negativity out of your life. We all feel insecure about different things and a lot of the same things, too, actually , but whatever it is you're feeling insecure about isn't really the point. The point is this: All levels of insecurity are unpleasant, and while feeling insecure is totally normal, it can steal your joy and seriously hinder your progress if you let it. So don't think you have to eradicate all insecurity from your life because, if we're being realistic, that's kind of unrealistic , but do realize that it's important to know what to tell yourself when you're feeling insecure.
