Hold the Dark by William GiraldiWritten with “force and precision and grace” (John Wilwol, New York Times Book Review) Hold the Dark is a “taut and unforgettable journey into the heart of darkness” (Dennis Lehane). At the start of another pitiless winter, wolves have taken three children from the remote Alaskan village of Keelut, including the six-year-old son of Medora and Vernon Slone. Wolf expert Russell Core is called in to investigate these killings and discovers an unholy truth harbored by Medora before she disappears. When her husband returns home to discover his boy dead and his wife missing, he begins a maniacal pursuit that cuts a bloody swath across the frozen landscape. With the help of a local police detective, Core attempts to find Medora before her husband does, setting in motion a deadly chain of events in this “chilling, mysterious, and completely engaging novel” (Tim O’Brien) that marks the arrival of a major American writer.

The new thriller has left some audience members scratching their heads over some parts. The new Netflix film from Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier, Hold the Dark, is an atmospheric and bloody thriller, but while we praised this, in our review we recognised that its ambiguities and enigmatic characters mean it will be divisive. Hold the Dark follows Russell Core Jeffrey Wright , a wildlife expert and writer contacted by Medora Sloane Riley Keough , whose son has vanished from the Alaskan village of Keelut, she says at the hands of wolves. We do find out what happens to Medora and Vernon's son Bailey Beckham Crawford , but this only poses further questions and events quickly spiral out of control. We complied a list of the biggest questions from the film and what the answers are - if there are any Medora Sloane invited expert in wolf behaviour Russell to her home to find out what the wolves did with her son Bailey and to find the one responsible - a bit of a tall order, but Russell stayed and agreed to help. However, Russell later discovered that Medora had fled her home and he later found Bailey's frozen dead body in the house's cellar for him to find.
Midway through Hold the Dark , a gun battle breaks out between a disgruntled resident of a rural Alaskan settlement and the local police. What starts out as a siege turns into a spectacle, with automatic weapons blazing, cars exploding, and blood flying in every direction. The film cuts from this carnage to two of its participants drinking wine and collecting themselves afterward, chatting as if they just had a tough day at the office. Saulnier, who directed the wonderfully nightmarish thrillers Blue Ruin and Green Room , has a vision of America that can be starkly brutal. Blue Ruin is a simple revenge narrative, in which a long-standing grudge erupts into a new cycle of killing, while Green Room follows a pitched struggle between a punk band and a group of neo-Nazis after a concert. Hold the Dark is something different, a tale with a sense of grandeur and mythic scale. Medora Sloane played by Riley Keough is a mother living in a small Alaskan town who lost her son to a pack of wolves.

Here's what it - and the whole movie - really means. Vern shoots Russell with an arrow then goes to choke his wife. She removes his mask, he pauses, and they passionately kiss before collapsing together to the floor. Core makes it partway from the cave only to be surrounded by wolves. However, they don't attack and Russell is saved by a group of native women while Vern and Medora retrieve their son's body and, carrying his coffin behind them, walk off into the wilderness.
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, and was released on September 28, , by Netflix. In December , Russell Core Jeffrey Wright , a writer who studies wolf behavior, is summoned to the small village of Keelut, Alaska by Medora Slone Riley Keough , who wants Core to hunt down the wolves blamed for the disappearances and presumed deaths of three small children, including Medora's 6-year-old son, Bailey. Core, staying at the Slone house, discusses the missing children with Medora, who tells him of a hot springs to the north of town. While stationed at a checkpoint, a shooting breaks out, Vernon is shot but survives to be sent home. In the morning, Core leaves town to track the wolves and meets an old native woman, Illanaq, who tells him he is going the wrong way, and that Medora 'knows evil'.
